The Topeka Zoo, otherwise known as “The World Famous Topeka Zoo”, is a medium-size zoo located in Gage Park. It has many superb exhibits, one of which is the first indoor tropical rain forests in the country. It attracts over 150,000 visitors every year, making it one of the most popular attractions in all of Topeka. Don’t let the name fool you, the zoo isn’t really world famous. The entrance sign says The World Famous Topeka Zoo, and the zoo’s first director, Gary Clarke, required employees to answer the phone with “World Famous Topeka Zoo”. The zoo got national attention when they raised the very first golden eagle in captivity in 1971, and the “world famous” name stuck.
One of the favorite things of the Topeka residents are the local casinos. There are three in the area: Sac and Fox Casino, Golden Eagle Casino, and Harrah’s Prairie Band Casino. All of the casinos feature slots, blackjack, craps, and roulette. Harrah’s has over 980 hot slots and over thirty game tables. They also offer a full buffet-restaurant and drinks available.
The Topeka History Museum is dedicated to telling the stories of days past in Topeka, from the days of the Indians, early settlers, and everything in between. Their main display is a restored locomotive that was used on the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad in 1880. They also have Indian teepee’s and a covered wagon from the Oregon Trail. There are many themes available including Native American History, Forts and Trails, Civil War, Settlement, Trains and Towns, African American History, Kansas Families, and much more.
